چکیده

In this paper a solar sail magnetotail mission concept was examined. The 43 m square solar sail is used to provide the required propulsion for continuous Sun-synchronous apse-line precession. The main driver in this mission was found to be the reduction of launch mass and mission cost while enabling a nominal duration of 2 years within the framework of a demonstration mission. It was found that the i Work conducted at University of Glasgow: now at SciSys Ltd., [email protected] ii Work conducted at University of Glasgow: now at EADS Astrium Ltd., [email protected] iii Professor, Department of Mechanical Engineering, Member AIAA [email protected] iv Science Payload and Advanced Concepts Office, ESTEC [email protected]

Solar Polar Orbiter: A Solar Sail Technology Reference Study

An assessment is presented of a Solar Polar Orbiter mission as a Technology Reference Study. The goal is to focus the development of strategically important technologies of potential relevance to future science missions. The technology is solar sailing, and so the use of solar sail propulsion is, thus, defined a priori. The primary mission architecture utilizes maximum Soyuz Fregat 2-1b launch ...

Aas 12-130 Feedback Stabilization of Displaced Periodic Orbits: Application to Binary Asteroid

This paper investigates displaced periodic orbits at linear order in the circular restricted Earth-Moon system (CRTBP), where the third massless body utilizes a hybrid of solar sail and a solar electric propulsion (SEP). A feedback linearization control scheme is implemented to perform stabilization and trajectory tracking for the nonlinear system. Attention is now directed to binary asteroid s...

Systems Design of a Hybrid Sail Pole - Sitter

This paper presents the preliminary systems design of a pole-sitter. This is a spacecraft that hovers over an Earth pole, creating a platform for full hemispheric observation of the polar regions, as well as direct-link telecommunications. To provide the necessary thrust, a hybrid propulsion system combines a solar sail with a more mature solar electric propulsion (SEP) thruster. Previous work ...

Harvesting Near Earth Asteroid Resources Using Solar Sail Technology

There may be differences between this version and the published version. You are advised to consult the publisher's version if you wish to cite from it. Near Earth asteroids represent a wealth of material resources to support future space ventures. These resources include water from C-type asteroids for crew logistic support; liquid propellants electrolytically cracked from water to fuel crewed...

Displaced Geostationary Orbit Design Using Hybrid Sail Propulsion

Due to an increase in number of geostationary spacecraft and limits imposed by east-west spacing requirements, the geostationary orbit is becoming congested. To increase its capacity, this paper proposes to create new geostationary slots by displacing the geostationary orbit either out of or in the equatorial plane by means of hybrid solar sail and solar electric propulsion. To minimize propell...
